At school when I was about fourteen years old I started thinking about things outside of the UK, I never really felt at home here. I thought particularly of the USA, how I wanted to travel there and see things. A school friend of mine shared this dream and we discussed it long and hard over a pool table, a coke and in his case a bag of pork scratchings, in what was then a teeny town pub in my home village in Shropshire. However, girls, parties and study meant that this dream vaporised a little, but was always still there, clouding the back of my mind like a thick fog.
When the distractions of teenagedom quickly lost there appeal I set about chasing my old dream, set about making plans and saving money, working thirty hours a week or more as well as study in university (study suffered). In May 2003 I left for the USA for several months, it was a strange thing being on ones own like that, it was a place for open mindedness, a place where everything is new. It was a real eye opener, a turning point for me. I met Rich later in the journey on a camping trip from Chicago to San Francisco, where we had some good adventures. Four years later, after much effort and saving, planning and preparation and injury, I finally set-off on my motorcycle trip around the world.
